Journey into justice

Ulysses “Butch” Slaughter, Jr is a passionate writer and filmmaker committed to exploring and illuminating the complexity of human relationships. A native of Chicago, Illinois, Ulysses was tossed into a tragic family inferno at age 12, as he listened to his mother, Clarice, being shot to death by his father, Ulysses Sr. The oldest witness in their home at the time, Ulysses was called to serve as the state’s chief witness against his father.

Within two years of his mother’s death, Ulysses enrolled in Quigley Seminary Preparatory South, a high school seminary designed to support young men on their path towards priesthood. At Quigley Ulysses would confront discussions of fate and free will, crime and punishment, Heaven and Hell. This stage of study would forever influence his existential writings, his perspectives on redemption and his passion toward reconciliation.

Despair-driven in Fall 2005, Ulysses wrote his book “Dear Daddy, I hate you: letters to my mother’s killer,” a compilation of letters and essays directed at his estranged father. He followed the book effort with the short film “To Hate,” a reflection on the years of domestic violence that led to his mother’s death.

As fate would have it, Ulysses confronted his father in December 2010 and initiated a radical reconciliation process that would forever change his contribution to audiences. Ulysses chronicles the reconciliation with his father through a series of videos called “Odyssey To Save Ulysses.”

In June 2011, just six months after reconnecting with his estranged father, Ulysses created and hosted the series “Reconciled” for the Oprah Winfrey Network.

Ulysses was the chief architect of The 2018 Philadelphia MOVE reconciliation campaign that led to an official apology for the urban bombing and killing of 11 people on May 13, 1985 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is host of the podcast “Re-member MOVE.” He is former Director of The OneTaste Orgasmic Meditation Reconciliation Council, an international conflict resolution team established to oversee the integrity of sexual play for OneTaste. His podcast, “One Black Taste,” chronicles his tumultuous time with the sex-positive organization.

Ulysses is a 2013 recipient of The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Leadership Award. He is a graduate of Lincoln University in Pennsylvania and a veteran of the US Navy. He resides in Media, Pennsylvania.
